  ** Hawaii Netwark Learning Communities
In Hawai`i and nationally, skills in math, science and technology are vital to the future success of our students. At the same time, the need to protect our environment is reaching critical levels. HNLC merges these needs in an innovative leadership development program and online support network designed to help Hawaii's teachers and students prepare for the future while preserving the cultural and ecological lessons of the past.
HNLC is a cooperative effort by the Hawai'i Department of Education, the University of Hawai'i Information & Computer Sciences Department, many community partners, and the teachers and students at 60 rural public schools throughout the islands. Thanks to generous support from the National Science Foundation, Hawaii's teachers now have access to an exciting professional development program, an online network of educational support, and local knowledge from mentors and community partners. They can develop and share inquiry-based lessons in math, science and technology that are rooted in the local environment and culture to inspire their students. HNLC's mission to empower Hawaii's rural students is driven by strategies supporting NSF's drivers for educational reform.
